It was Sunday morning and the Royals were playing Team Quebec but it felt like the Royals were replaying Friday night's game vs the Toronto Mets.
Starting pitcher Arsene Pinguelo, lasted only 1 2/3 innings allowing six runs, four of them earned, on 3 hits, 4 walks, 2 hit batters and 2 ks. Pinguelo was followed by Cody Delorme who went 2 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs on one hit, 6 walks, a hit batter and one K. Lefty, Andrew Filler pitched the last 1 2/3 innings allowing 2 walks and hiiting a batter.
While the pitchers were giving 16 free passes to the team from Quebec, the Royal hitters were having all kinds of trouble against a slow throwing lefty managing only 4 singles in the first 6 innings and trailed 9-0 going into the last inning. In the 7th inning and now facing a right handed pitcher the Royals batted around scoring 4 runs on 3 base hits and 2 walks making the final score 9-4.
Despite losing all four games the Royals should have a good year ahead of them. With only five returning players, five brand new players and 12 players moving up from the 16U team, the Royals are a young team who have only been together as a team for 2 weeks. At least half of the team are young enough to be on a 17U team and this bolds well for the future. With 17 players playing for the first time at the 18U level, nerves appeared to be a factor for some of the players, in particular, with their two 16 year old starting pitchers, Dolan Dunigan and Arsene Pinguelo.
Hopefully the team will be able to file this tournament under "experience" and if they continue to work hard under the leadership of their coaches Jason Booth and Derek Rothwell, wins will soon follow.
