PARKLAND & VINCENNES TOO STRONG FOR YOUNG ROYALS

The Royals faced two of the top junior colleges back to back on Saturday morning at Champaign, Illinois. In the first game they faced the Division 2 national champions, Parkland C.C. and in the second game they played against Vincennes University from Indiana who had a 2009 spring record of 27-11 including a 15-1 victory against the Royals last March. The starters on both of these teams are at least 2 to 3 years older than the Royals oldest player and thus they were very difficult games for the Royals.
In the first game the Parkland Cobras scored seven runs in the second inning off Royals starting pitcher Philip Hinton on the way to a 14-0 victory. Hinton pitched 3 innings allowing 7 runs on 7 hits, 1 walk and a strike out. The last 3 innings were pitched by Daniel Campos who allowed seven runs, 5 of them earned, on 8 hits and four walks.
The Royals managed only four hits against Parkland pitchers which included a closer who was throwing his fast ball at 93 mph. The Royals hits were hit by Jordan Grant, Dalton Pompey, Mitchell Mattarollo and Edward Largy.
In the second game starting pitcher Jeff Park got off to a strong start allowing only one unearned run on one hit before Vincennes University striked for six runs in the third inning on four hits including a 3 run home run. Andrew Filler replaced Jeff Park to start the 4th inning and pitched 2 2/3 innings and allowed six runs, 3 earned, on two hits, 2 Ks, 4 walks and two hit batters. Cody Delorme came in with the bases loaded and two out and walked the first 2 hitters before getting the final out on a pop to third base.
The Royals scored the first of their two runs in the second inning which at the time tied the game at one when Justin Zealand hit the first of his two singles to score Jahmal Brooks who had started the inning with a single. The second run was scored in the 7th inning when the Royals got hits from Ryan Fedrigo and Jordan Grant making the final score 14-2. Mirek Sharp also hit a single for the Royals.
