In their last game before departing for a 12 day trip to the USA where they will play nine games in ten days against American colleges, the Royals beat the Etobicoke Rangers 7-6 last night at Connorvale Park.
The Royals scored three runs in the first inning as they pounded out four hits with the big one being a two rbi double by first baseman Jahmal Brooks. In the fourth inning the Royals increased their lead to 4-0 when left fielder Mitchell Mattarollo scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by second baseman Mirek Sharp.
The Royals used nine pitchers with each pitcher working one inning. Ryan Fedrigo, Arsene Pinguelo, Cody Delorme, Andrew Filler, Jeff Park and Mirek Sharp did not allow a hit during the first six innings and striked out seven Rangers.
The last third of the game was filled with errors which allowed the Rangers to score two runs in each of the last three innings. With the Royals up 5-0 ,Daniel Campos pitched the seventh inning and was the victim of five Royals errors including one by himself and two in the same play by center fielder Ryan Fedrigo as the Rangers came within three runs.
In the top of the eighth inning the Royals scored two runs making the score 7-2. Short Stop Jordan Grant scored a run and hit a rbi triple giving him his fourth hit of the night to go along with a walk and another run scored in the first inning. In the bottom of the inning the Rangers scored two more runs, one of them unearned, of Royals pitcher Chris Ruediger who allowed 2 hits and hit a batter while striking out two.
The Rangers sent 8 hitters to the plate in the bottom of the 9th and scored 2 runs, one earned, off right hand pitcher Phil Hinton who gave up a hit and walked three before inducing a ground ball to first base for the final out with the bases loaded.
Tomorrow morning the team is off to their USA fall trip where they will play 9 games against American junior colleges including Division 2 champions, Parkland.
I will be following the team and will report after every game if possible.
